This is the 41st year of the world-renowned photo festival, Rencontres d’Arles in the medieval city of Arles, France. As always, the festival will attract a worldwide audience of photo lovers, photographers, experts, curators, scholars and collectors, who congregate in the small Roman town in the south of France for a month every year.

The theme for 2010 is Du lourd et du piquant, translated by the organizers as Heavy Duty and Razor Sharp. The festival features several “trails”: including work that touches on Argentina, rock music, film photography, changeovers, prison life, and more.

We’ve selected 40+ photos for our preview slideshow this year. They’re typically eclectic and diverse. We’ll be eager to see what else is showing alongside these pieces. See the slideshow.
