Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received–only what you have given. – St. Francis of Assisi

During my artist in residence stay at Art Studio Ginestrelle near Assisi Italy, I went to several Umbrian towns and asked to make portraits of the residents which they could in turn,  collect for free at the International Exhibition of Art in Assisi at the “Gallery Le Logge”, December 2-9, 2012.

The concept “Ritratto Gratis” or “Free Portrait” is not a new one among artists but I felt it was fitting for the historical town of Assisi as I was inspired from the following quote from St. Francis of Assisi himself. He said “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received–only what you have given.”

I made over 80 portraits over two weeks and it was a wonderful way to interact with local Italians, even with minimal language skills!  A journalist from the local paper “Corriere dell’Umbria” saw me, interviewed me and ran this charming looking story in Italian (below).  How fun… I wonder what it says! More images to share this fall. -Erika.
