Student Work: Light as Subject

The second assignment in my Beginning Photography class is titled Light as Subject. Here are some student samples from several weeks ago – they were really paying attention to the artist’s works shown in class. The influence shows. Great job!

ASSIGNMENT:
The word “photography” literally means to draw, or mark with light. The point of this assignment is to intimately understand this.  Light or shadow should have a very strong presence in your photographs.  Your challenge is to evoke mood, interpret or tell a story via light or shadow.

Take a two hour or more walk during a time of day when the lighting is dramatic and shoot 1-2 rolls of film or equivalent amount of digital images. Pay special attention to light AND shadow, make the photographs about light or shadow or both.
