Student Spotlight: MacKenzie Grout “Slave Castles”

Semester at Sea Spring 2016 Photography student MacKenzie Grout, along with many SAS students, spent time touring the emotionally dark and historically poignant slave castles of West Africa and produced this piece for her final photography project. See more SAS Photography projects on this blog and on youtube.

Paradoxical photos – on one hand- before knowing what these places represent – I love the lighting that gives a delicate watercolor wash effect to some of these places, and then also on the other hand – I like the notoriety given to terrible places of the past that should not be forgotten for what they really meant.
